The Heart of Leadership in the Pacific

As Executive Director of ECG, I am honored to represent our team at the 4th Legacy Leadership Symposium 2026 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Under this year's theme, "Servant Leadership:Building a Legacy Through Service" I am sharing our experience on strategic leadership, governance, communications and what it truly means to lead through the Vā.

Understanding the Vā in Leadership

In Pacific cultures, the Vā is the sacred relational space between people—where trust, respect, and mutual understanding grow. As leaders, it is our collective responsibility to recognize, nurture, and care for this space. In any organization or workplace, a conversation never happens in isolation; it lands inside a relationship shaped by identity, trust, history, role, culture, and power.

How Communication Happens in the Vā

Effective strategic communication requires us to be mindful of both sides of the relational bridge:

Dimension

Core Focus

My Perspective as a Leader

YOU (The Leader)

Words, Actions, Intent

I align my intent with clear actions and words so messages land constructively.

THE VĀ (Relational Space)

Trust, Respect, Connection

We nurture a safe environment that carries the message and holds relationships.

THEM (The Listener)

Perspective, Experience, Reality

I listen deeply to honor their lived experience and personal reality.

Navigating Honest Conversations

Caring for the Vā does not mean avoiding challenge or conflict. Instead, it means I approach honest conversations with respect, humility, and a genuine intent to understand. When we remain mindful of the Vā, our communication builds stronger relationships, even when the conversation is difficult.

Our Commitment Across the Pacific

At ECG, we firmly believe that leadership grounded in values, service, and purpose has the power to create lasting change. Through our work across Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific, we support organizations through:

  • Strategic Advisory & Governance: Building capable, ethical organizations and strengthening leadership capability.

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Facilitation: Creating meaningful, inclusive spaces for dialogue.

  • Research & Evaluation: Informing strategic decision-making through community-centered insights.

I am proud to stand alongside Pacific leaders to share our perspectives and strengthen our regional connections.
