Elika Consulting Group (ECG) is proud to announce the release of three captivating Pasifika History resources as part of New Zealand’s national school curriculum, under the Koloa Project. Commissioned by the Ministry of Education, this initiative aims to enrich students’ understanding of Māori and Pacific local histories in New Zealand.
The Koloa project features a range of compelling and historically significant stories, including the courageous contributions of the 150 Niuean soldiers who served in World War I, the establishment of the Pasifika Rugby Hall of Fame, which honors the legacy of Pasifika players in the sport, and the cultural and economic significance of the iconic Otara markets, a vibrant hub for the Pasifika community.
“ECG has captured these historical stories through our kids' eyes. It has been a pleasure to work with ECG to support these stories being told," says Esa Samani, manager at NZ Curriculum & Te Whāriki ,Te Poutāhū Curriculum Centre.
Over the past year, ECG has engaged extensively with Pasifika communities and leaders across Auckland, New Zealand, gathering a wealth of stories that reflect the richness and diversity of Pasifika heritage. From this, ECG has crafted a series of short educational videos, designed to captivate and engage intermediate-aged students, delivering culturally significant stories to life in a format that resonates with younger audiences.
“It’s a privilege to create visual stories of our Pacific history in Aotearoa for all New Zealanders. We've shared them in a way that our kids can interact and understand through their eyes,” shared Sara-Jane Elika, Director of ECG.
More than just educational tools, these resources preserve and celebrate Pasifika culture and history, ensuring that these vital stories are passed down to future generations.
These invaluable resources are now available on the Ministry of Education's online platform, Te Poutāhū Tahurangi. Accessible to all schools and teachers across New Zealand, the Koloa project extends its reach beyond Pacific students, offering a unique opportunity for all students to engage with and appreciate the rich tapestry of Pacific history.
